CHAPTER 10

Fishery

Fishery resources in the Philippines are broadly classified into marine and inland resources. Marine resources include coastal areas and other traditional fishing grounds, while inland resources include lakes, reservoirs, rivers, brackishwater and freshwater fishponds.

For fish production purposes, fishery resources are categorized as either marine or aquaculture. Marine resources consist of commercial and municipal fisheries and seafarming.

Inland Fishponds

Fishpond refers to a body of water (artificial or natural) where fish and other aquatic products are cultured, raised or cultivated under controlled conditions.

Brackishwater fishpond operation in 2008 generated a total production of 2,243.15 metric tons, an increase of 23.45 metric tons or 1.06 percent from 2007 production.

Marine Fish Landed

In 2008, the quantity of marine fish landed by commercial fishing vessels in the province totaled 2,449.49 metric tons. It registered a decrease of 4.30 percent from the previous year’s figure of 2.559.47 metric tons.
